The president of the Texas Association of Business has come out against transparency with respect to doing business with state and local governments. He pulled out the old canard that more mandated transparency would result in disclosure of trade secrets and proprietary information even though proposed legislation, SB 407, includes safeguards against disclosure of competitive information.
The city of Georgetown uses the same old tired arguments that releasing financial information about contracts the city has with private vendors would violate state law that restricts disclosure of such information. The citizens/taxpayers have a right to know precisely how their tax dollars are being spent. It is time for a "true" sunshine law for Texas that requires disclosure of all information except, personal information or issues that are under current litigation.
