Major Management Failure With Respect to GUS

The appointments to the GUS(Georgetown Utility Systems) board were placed on hold this week by the city council until a workshop could be organized to redefine the role of the GUS board and the qualifications of the people appointed to serve.

“The GUS board doesn’t have the responsibilities or the talent to look at the financials,” Councilman Steve Fought said.

“The purpose of the GUS board now is to look at rate structures, infrastructure plans and an overall budget. It’s not to look at the finances.

People on GUS are very talented. There are people who understand rate structure and the things GUS is supposed to do, but nobody has the experience or task to look at the things that generated the problems we have now.”

This makes it clear that no one was watching over the financials of GUS, including the negotiation of contracts.

This is a major management failure on the part of the city manager and the city council.
